Dear Future Interns: What I Wish I Knew Before Starting My Seoul Internship

[Put down the shovel. Take off your gloves. Take the body of your past self out of the grave you dug. Now face the truth: you don’t need to reinvent yourself.]

When I first arrived in Seoul, I thought I would emerge a brand-new version of myself. I imagined shedding my insecurities and coming home completely changed. But I soon realized: growth doesn’t require becoming someone else. Instead, it means understanding and celebrating who you already are.

South Korea is world-renowned for beauty from skincare and facials to curated cosmetics and procedures. It’s tempting to think transformation starts at the surface. I visited a clinic once, and the esthetician reminded my friend with a small smile, “You’re only 20.”

[That moment stuck with me. We’re so eager to upgrade ourselves when sometimes we just need to be reminded of how whole we already are.]

Instead of focusing on “fixing” yourself, soak in what the city gives you: joy, perspective, laughter over Korean BBQ, walks along the Han River, the calm chaos of convenience stores, and the beauty in shared silence on the metro.

“When no one else is left, there is only you.”

In Seoul, I felt myself shifting to fit in, shapeshifting to match those around me — adjusting my personality to blend. It made me question who I really was without all the noise.

Turns out, growth isn't about burning everything down. It’s about building quietly, steadily.

I found myself again through reflection — journaling, art, photography. [Your method might be different: music, conversations, walks.] The important thing is pausing enough to hear yourself think. Seoul moves fast. It rewards efficiency. But make sure you’re not sprinting past your own growth.

“Build, not burn.”

When I joined CRCC Asia’s internship program in Seoul, I came with the mindset that I had to start fresh, a blank slate, ready to absorb everything.

[But by week four, I learned something even more valuable: I don’t need to erase who I am to grow.]

Seoul didn’t teach me to reinvent myself. It taught me how to love myself better. [The structure, pace, and culture opened up moments of stillness in unexpected places – early train rides, shared lunches, and deep late-night talks.]

Now, I carry that version of myself forward. I didn't leave her behind in Seoul. I brought her home, more rooted, more aware, more myself.
